Abertay is a modern university with a global outlook, rooted in its local and national communities. We have made our mark with high quality, well-directed teaching and research, and a stimulating and enriching experience for our students.
The School of Design and Informatics (SDI) at Abertay University in Dundee seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Computing. This new opportunity has arisen from our expanding international partnerships and significant investment in research and knowledge exchange.
SDI consists of three divisions: Games Technology and Mathematics, Games and Arts, and Cybersecurity. SDI is the home of Abertay’s undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in games, digital arts, cybersecurity and applied computer science. Abertay was the first university to offer degrees in Computer Games and Ethical Hacking, and continues to be recognised as an international leader in its fields. The School is designated the National Centre of Excellence in Computer Games Education. Additionally, the University has recently been recognised as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education (Gold Award) by the National Cyber Security Centre.
The successful candidate will teach across the Divisions in the School contributing to our subject areas of Artificial Intelligence and Computing. In addition, the postholder will lead the university-wide AI research strategy and it's integration into the curriculum, working closely with AI champions from the other schools and delivering staff development in the Graduate School. Additionally, there will be opportunities to contribute to specialist modules across the games and applied artificial intelligence subject areas. There will be ample opportunity for staff development and RKE opportunities based on our current RKE portfolio including InGAME (£11.5M with the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews), CyberQuarter (£18M) and the School’s Emergent Technology Centre (5G enabled). We are especially keen to receive applications from those with experience of one or more of the areas of real-time 3D development, VR/AR, and ML/AI, together with previous simulation, app or game development experience.
The post holder will also develop research objectives, projects and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects aligned with the Abertay Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy. To support this endeavour, suitably qualified newly appointed academics will be given a fully funded 3.5 year PhD studentship (or equivalent funding for academics with already established research teams) to jointly supervise with colleagues from within the University. The proposed research will be subject to approval from the Dean of School and the Research Executive. The successful candidate will devote approximately half their time to research in the first two years; the rest will be allocated to teaching and other activities. By year three, we expect the role holder to have established themselves and their allocation of research time will be as per the academic workload model guidance for the University.
The School is dedicated to providing a diverse, supportive and inclusive environment for all of its staff and students to reach their full potential. The School’s staff share workspaces regardless of specialism, to encourage collaboration and creative working among complementary disciplines and to create a genuinely multi-disciplinary environment.
The successful candidate will work both independently and collegiately and be able to demonstrate good interpersonal, organisational and communication skills and have an ability to take initiative.
